Bio

Dr Travis Holland is a communication professional and researcher specialising in media ecology, science communication, and digital culture. With over two decades of experience spanning journalism, academia, and content production, he works at the intersection of media analysis and practice — bringing research rigour to public communication and industry thinking.

Through Extinction Media, his content and consultancy agency, Travis produces work that connects careful analysis with broad audiences. This includes Frequency, a newsletter examining trends and developments in Australian media, and Fossils & Fiction, a science communication podcast co-hosted with Alyssa Fjeld that explores palaeontology through the lens of popular culture.

His research spans three interconnected areas:

Media and Technology Studies

Investigating how emerging technologies shape public communication and cultural narratives — from social media’s influence on local governance to digital platforms and fan communities. This includes doctoral research examining media networks in NSW Local Government Areas, which revealed critical information challenges facing regional communities.

Science Communication and Popular Culture

Exploring how scientific knowledge is mediated through popular culture, including work on palaeontological representation in media, space exploration narratives, and the intersection of scientific discourse with entertainment. Projects have examined science podcasting methodologies and the cultural legacy of Jurassic Park on public understanding of palaeontology.

Digital Practice and Innovation

Advocating for innovative approaches to digital communication and pedagogy, with a particular focus on online student media, creative practice methodologies, and the evolving relationship between institutions and digital publics.

This interdisciplinary expertise is reflected in publications across leading journals including Television and New Media, Media International Australia, and Persona Studies, as well as public writing for The Conversation and commentary for ABC and international media outlets. Previously, Travis served as a Senior Lecturer and Course Director at Charles Sturt University, where he co-founded the Media Lab research group.
