moving on up

After 9.5 years, I’m finishing up at Charles Sturt Uni on Christmas Eve.

I’m proud of what we achieved. As Course Director pre-pandemic, I led course and subject design work that slowed a steep enrolment decline, significantly improved our retention rates, and brought our discipline’s budget back into balance. I’m equally proud of the research I’ve produced on everything from Jurassic Park to television in spaceflight and even a look at LEGO fandom. I still have some to come that should be published in the next six months or so.

The last few years have been harder. The CSU communication academic team showed incredible grit and resilience as the institution moved in directions we couldn’t control. I’m proud of that resilience. I’m proud of the people I worked alongside.

So what’s next?
I’m launching Extinction Media, a consultancy and production business that gathers up projects I’ve been nurturing and gives them room to grow. It’s deliberately broad because I want space to explore: media strategy, content production, research partnerships, science communication.

I’m also launching Frequency, a fortnightly newsletter where I’ll be analysing media, unpacking culture, asking awkward questions. You can subscribe now at https://frequency.ghost.io/

And I’m planning a solo Eurotrip: Denmark, Norway and the UK, here I come.

I’m open to interesting opportunities both through Extinction Media and more traditional employment. If you know of something that might be a good fit, or if you’d just like to stay in touch, reach out.
